About RTY

RTY follows the Russell 2000: about 2,000 small US companies, the smaller part of the Russell 3000 index.

Traders use it for small-cap exposure, apart from the large companies that drive ES and NQ.

It ticks in 0.10 index points worth $5, finer than the 0.25-point ticks of ES and NQ.

What one RTY move is worth

Worked examples with an example move (not a quote):

  • A 10-point move on 1 RTY = 100 ticks × $5.00 = $500.00.
  • A 10-point move on 2 RTY = $1,000.00.
  • 1 tick on 10 RTY = 10 × $5.00 = $50.00.
  • The same 10-point move on 1 M2K = $50.00.

RTY and M2K

M2K is the micro version of RTY. RTY = 10 × M2K: M2K ticks are worth $0.50 and a 1.00 move is $5.

Micros let you size in smaller steps: a stop of the same distance costs a fraction as much. See micro vs mini futures to convert a position from one to the other.

RTY FAQ

How much is 1 RTY contract worth?

Its notional value is the price times $50. At an example price of 2,800.0, 1 RTY controls $140,000. Type the current price in the notional value box on this page for today's figure. The margin your broker asks to hold the contract is a different, much smaller number set by the broker and CME.

What is the RTY tick value?

One RTY tick is 0.1 index points and is worth $5.00 per contract (CME Group contract specs). A 1.00 move in the price is worth $50.

How many ticks are in a point on RTY?

10. A tick is 0.1, so a 1.00 move is 10 ticks × $5.00 = $50.

How many M2K make one RTY?

10 M2K carry the same exposure as 1 RTY: 10 × $5 = $50 per 1.00 move. A 10-point move is worth $500.00 on 1 RTY and $50.00 on 1 M2K.

Is RTY cash-settled?

Yes. RTY is cash-settled ("financially settled" in the CME specs): there is no delivery, open positions are settled in cash at expiry.

Which months does RTY trade?

Quarterly contracts (Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec) listed for 5 consecutive quarters, 2 additional June contract months and 4 additional December contract months (CME Group). Month codes: H, M, U, Z.
