Outright tick shown; calendar spreads and TAS/BTIC trade in other increments. Tick size, tick value and contract size come from the CME Group spec page. A second source, read the same day, confirms them: Barchart's contract profile (tick size and tick value) or, for MYM, M2K, MCL and M6E, TradingView (contract size).

How to read the chart

Tick size is the smallest price step. Tick value is what that step pays or costs on one contract. Point value is what a 1.00 move in the price is worth: the tick value divided by the tick size.

P&L = (price move ÷ tick size) × tick value × contracts

Three worked examples (example moves, not quotes):

  • MNQ: a 10-point move on 2 contracts = 40 ticks × $0.50 × 2 = $40.
  • CL: a $0.25 move on 1 contract = 25 ticks × $10.00 = $250.
  • 6E: 20 ticks on 1 contract = 20 × $6.25 = $125. A 6E tick is half a pip, so a 20-pip move (0.0020) is 40 ticks = $250.

Micro and mini contracts

Each micro is one tenth of its E-mini or standard contract, with the same tick size, so its tick value is a tenth too. Two exceptions: Micro Silver (SIL) is 1,000 ounces against 5,000 for SI, so it is a fifth; and M6E ticks in whole pips (0.0001) while 6E ticks in half pips (0.00005). The micro vs mini futures page converts between them.

FAQ

What is a tick value in futures?

A tick is the smallest price step a futures contract can move. The tick value is what one tick is worth in dollars on one contract. MNQ moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $0.50; ES moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $12.50.

What is the tick value of NQ and MNQ?

Both move in ticks of 0.25 index points. One NQ tick is $5.00 and one point is $20. One MNQ tick is $0.50 and one point is $2. MNQ is one tenth of NQ.

What is the gold futures tick value?

Gold (GC) moves in ticks of $0.10 per troy ounce on 100 ounces, so one tick is $10.00 and a $1.00 move is $100. Micro Gold (MGC) is 10 ounces: $1.00 per tick, $10 per $1.00 move.

Which futures have the smallest tick value?

In this chart, MNQ, MYM and M2K have the smallest tick value at $0.50 per tick. MGC and MCL are $1.00, MES and M6E are $1.25.

Do these values change with the price?

No. The tick size and tick value are fixed by the exchange in the contract specs. The dollar value of a whole contract (its notional value) does change with the price: it is the price times the point value. CME can change a tick size, as it did for Micro Silver (SIL) in 2020, so check the linked CME page before you trade.
