Chicago and New York change clocks on the same days, so ET is always CT + 1 hour. Europe changes on other dates: in the weeks between (March, and late October), the hours in London or Paris are one hour earlier than the rest of the year.

Prop firms close earlier than CME
Many prop firm plans do not let you hold a futures position through the close. They flatten you, or count it as a rule break, at their own time, before CME's 4:00 p.m. CT close.

How CME Globex hours work
CME Globex trades almost 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. The week opens on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. CT. Each weekday closes at 4:00 p.m. CT; Monday to Thursday it reopens an hour later, at 5:00 p.m. CT, and that evening session belongs to the next trading day. Friday's 4:00 p.m. CT close ends the week.
The US stock market (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET) is only part of that day. Index futures like ES and NQ also trade overnight, through the Asian and European sessions, which is why they move before the stock market opens.
On US holidays the schedule changes by product group: equity index futures usually halt at noon CT, metals and energy at 1:30 p.m. CT, and currency futures often trade without a settlement. A halted day does not settle, so CME skips it when it counts business days to an expiry. What one contract is worth: futures tick values.
FAQ
What time do futures open on Sunday?
CME Globex opens the futures week on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. CT, which is 6:00 p.m. ET. That holds for all 16 contracts on this page: the equity index futures (ES, NQ, YM, RTY and their micros), gold and silver, crude oil and the euro. In London it is 11:00 p.m. most of the year, but 10:00 p.m. in the weeks when US and UK clocks differ: from the second to the last Sunday of March, and from the last Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November. The Sunday evening session is the start of Monday's trading day.
What time do futures close on Friday?
At 4:00 p.m. CT (5:00 p.m. ET), the regular daily close. There is no evening reopen on Friday: CME Globex stays shut on Saturday and reopens on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. CT.
What is the daily maintenance break?
From Monday to Thursday, CME Globex stops at 4:00 p.m. CT (5:00 p.m. ET) and reopens at 5:00 p.m. CT (6:00 p.m. ET). CME calls it a daily maintenance period on the equity index spec pages and a 60-minute break on the metals, energy and currency pages. Nothing trades during that hour. The evening reopen starts the next trading day: a trade at 7:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday counts for Wednesday.
Are futures open on holidays?
Often yes, with shorter hours. On most US holidays CME Globex opens as usual the evening before and halts early on the day, without a settlement. On Thanksgiving Day (Thu, Nov 26, 2026), equity index halt at 12:00 p.m. CT, metals and energy halt at 1:30 p.m. CT, currency trade their usual hours without a settlement. A few days are fully closed: New Year's Day 2026, Christmas Day 2026, New Year's Day 2027, Good Friday 2027, Christmas Day (observed) 2027. The day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve close early. The next schedule change is Thanksgiving Day on Thu, Nov 26, 2026.
Do prop firms make you close before the futures market closes?
Many do, at their own time, before CME's 4:00 p.m. CT close: Lucid Trading 4:45 p.m. ET, Tradeify 4:45 p.m. ET, Topstep 3:10 p.m. CT, Apex Trader Funding 4:59 p.m. ET, MyFundedFutures 4:10 p.m. ET, FTMO 4:10 p.m. ET. A position still open then is closed for you, or counts as a rule break, depending on the firm. These times come from each firm's help pages (table above); check your own plan, and its rule for holiday half-days.
Do futures trading hours change with daylight saving time?
Not in Chicago: the hours are always 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, and New York is always one hour later because both change clocks on the same days. In your own time zone the hours can move. Europe changes clocks on other dates than the US, so for two or three weeks in March and one week around the end of October the futures open and close one hour earlier than usual in London or Paris.
